What Really Happened to Laci Peterson
What Really Happened to
Laci Peterson
On December 24, 2002, eight-month pregnant Laci Peterson went on a walk with her dog, McKenzie, never to be seen again (McLaughlin). Or did she? According to her husband, Scott Peterson, on the morning of December 24th, he and Laci woke up; she showered, curled her hair, and began watching Martha Stewart on television (pg. 1). He then left to go fishing at Berkeley Marina. Upon his return, Laci was nowhere to be found (pg. 1)
Detective Craig Gorgan took the stand, telling a different version of the story (“Expert Estimates Death Date of Peterson Fetus.”). He alleged that Scott Peterson murdered his wife and their unborn child in the family's home sometime around December 24th. He then loaded her lifeless body into the bed of his truck, and then drove to his shop (pg. 1). Scott picked up his boat, five anchors, and headed out to Berkeley Marina. He then dumped his wife, Laci, and their unborn child, Conner, into the Marina (pg. 1). So, which is it? Could it be as simple as Scott Peterson killing his wife, Laci? Is it possible that there is another reality at play in this tragic story?
Scott & Laci
Scott and Laci met in 1994 in San Luis Obispo, California, where both attended California Polytechnic State University (McNally; Pagones). When not attending classes, Scott worked as a waiter at Pacific Cafe (McNally). It was there that Laci Denise Rocha's dimples and big smile first caught the eye of the charming waiter (Pagones). In a bold move, Laci was the one to conjure up the courage to pass him her phone number (Bono; McNally). Even before their first date, Laci was confident she would one day walk down the aisle to marry Scott (McNally). Her mother recalled the day that she called to tell her about the charismatic boy she had met (Phillips): "Mother," Laci said, "I have met the man I am going to marry. You've just got to get down here and meet him." Sharon asked if they had gone out yet. "Not yet, but we will." That notion would come true, as two years later she and Scott were wed (Phillips). After completing college, the ambitious couple opened a successful burger restaurant named "The Shack" (McNally). However, the couple longed for something more, to be close to Laci's family (McNally). So, the couple sold their thriving business and made the three and a half hour move to Modesto, California (McNally).
December 2002

A few years after settling into Modesto, Scott and Laci discovered that Laci would be conceiving their first son, a boy. They would later decide on the name Conner (Pagones). However, baby Conner would never make his grand arrival, as he and Laci would be murdered just a few weeks before his due date (McLaughlin). Two theories surround the murder of Laci and Conner. Some would say that Scott murdered his wife and unborn child, while others are not so sure. In recent years, inquiring minds have begun to explore the idea that maybe it was not Scott. A robbery took place directly across the street from the Peterson household on the same day that Laci went missing. Could that have had anything to do with the initial disappearance of Laci? On December 24, 2002, a family's worst nightmare would begin to unravel. Upon returning from a day trip to fish at Berkeley Marina, Scott would discover that Laci was not there. However, their dog, McKenzie, was in the backyard with her leash still on, and the back door was unlocked (Flowers). Even though Laci was not home, Scott noticed that her green Land Rover was still parked in the drive, and her personal belongings remained on the counter (McLaughlin,1). Although this seemed strange, the couple planned to spend Christmas Eve with Laci's family, so Scott assumed that Laci was at her mother's house and that she had picked Laci up (1). After bringing McKenzie inside, Scott threw his clothes in the wash and showered (Flower). This detail would later become a cause for controversy as many people wanted to know why he would wash his clothes (Flower). After his shower, Scott listens to the messages on the answering machine. He became concerned as he came across a message from Laci's family asking them to bring an additional item for dinner that night (Flower). Scott then decided to call Laci's mother (Flower). Following that phone call, it became clear that his wife was missing, and Scott began knocking on neighbors' doors, looking for Laci while Laci's stepfather called the police (1). First on the scene is Detective Al Brocchini (Flower). From the beginning, Detective Brocchini revealed that he believed Scott Peterson was acting out of character. Two things in particular stood out to Brocchini. First, Scott was more concerned with ensuring detectives used a coaster and were careful around his vehicles to avoid leaving a scratch (pg. 1). Second, Brocchini would later tell Judge Began, while obtaining a warrant, that there was an odor of bleach (1, Harris). While Detective Brocchini was zeroing in on Scott, Scott and his family were also becoming suspicious of Detective Brocchini and his intentions. On December 25th, Detectives requested Peterson to take a polygraph test (pg. 1). Which Scott's family cautioned him to deny, and he did, only furthering suspicions for the police (pg. 1). Then, on December 26th, Detectives came to the Peterson residence requesting a second full sweep of the home. Peterson stated that without a warrant, he would need to clear this up with his lawyer (pg. 1). By this time, twenty-four-hour news stations had been posted up and down the street, waiting to get the first break in the story of Laci Peterson (pg. 1). All the while the country is asking, where is Laci Peterson? Another crime surfaces. Upon returning home from a Christmas trip, the neighbors directly across the street discover their hg robbed and got a full glimpse of the burglars (pg. 1). After a few short days, the police apprehended the two robbers. Without prompting, both robbers tell the police, we had nothing to do with "that pregnant girl" (pg.1). After questioning, the police believe that this event has nothing to do with the disappearance of Peterson and give a public statement that this case has been completed. Also, stating that this robbery took place on December 26th, not the 24th, and that the two events are not tied in any way (pg.1). On the same day that police close the robbery case, CPD gets a call from a woman named Amber Frey, stating that she has been having relations with Scott Peterson (Flower). Once Frey comes forward, the media takes hold and begins to blow this relationship into a full-blown, long-term affair, even producing photos of Amber sitting on Scott's lap at a holiday party (MacKelden). However, when the truth came out, the couple had only been seeing each other for five weeks and had only seen each other in person four times (pg.1). Nonetheless, on December 30th, police began to use Frey to record phone conversations with Peterson (pg. 1). The phone conversation that would haunt him at his trial was the night of the New Year's Vidual hosted by his and Laci's families. In this phone call, Scott claims to be in Paris and evades Frey's questions about who he is with on this holiday trip to France (pg. 1). As police continue to collect information through wiretapping, ooking for my wife (pg. 1). Even going as far as to go on Diane Sawyer to answer the world's questions (pg. 1). As much as the world wanted answers, the case went cold following his interviews. The police are fairly certain if you ask Al Brocchini, they are certain that Scott murdered his wife, but there is not enough evidence to move forward in this case (Harris). That is until April 13, 2003, when Scott's wife and child wash up on the same shore that Peterson visited on Christmas Eve. To the police, the case was closed, but was it?
While this seems like an open and closed case, there are just so many holes to be filled. Starting with police claiming that the robbery happened on December 26th. Is it truly possible that twenty-four-hour news media could be parked outside of a house while it was being robbed? Investigators claim that the burglars stated that they placed the home safe on the front lawn while robbing the house (Flower). How does one place a whole safe on the front lawn and bring out personal belongings directly across the street of a home that is under surveillance without anyone noticing?? Why would Scott be worried about a coaster on the table and not denting the car if he were certain his wife was not coming back? These are not typically things that a man would care about, but things that his wife or mother has hounded him about in the past and he is still respecting (pg. 1). While Brocchini states that he smelled an aroma of bleach, even the best cleaning leaves forensic evidence (Harris). How does a man murder his wife and unborn child, move them to the bed of his truck, through his shop, onto a boat, and not leave a single spec of evidence (1)? Why would Scott come clean to Amber Frye on January 6, 2023, stating that his wife is missing and he is sorry he lied (pg. 1)? Then, cautioning her to watch her back with the media (Flower). So, did he really kill her? Is it possible that the police closed the robbery case too soon due to Amber Frye's appearance and Al Brocchini's suspicions? Why would two robbers mention the disappearance of a woman who has nothing to do with the home they are burglarizing without being prompted? So many questions remain unanswered, yet Scott Peterson sits in jail for a murder, that most signs say he did not commit. Will the truth of what happened to Laci and Conner on Christmas Eve ever be told? Will Scott Peterson spend the rest of his life in prison? Only time will tell.
